Does Your Family Business Need a Family Therapist?
I have found that companies have many of the same characteristics commonly found in families. So if you find yourself running a family business, no doubt you have found that the same unhealthy family interaction patterns repeat themselves at work. I can help your company's management and work teams develop effective strategies to become more productive by applying some of the principles of systemic therapy. Here are some examples of how company dynamics work like family dynamics and can cause problems.
1. Attendance : Excessive absenteeism and high turnover are similar to family members responding in an unhealthy way by becoming emotionally distant and running away.
2. Rebellion : When employees feel unable to express their feelings and opinions they sometimes resort to acting them out by violating rules, sabotaging the company, and so on. Children and adolescents often do this in families where they don't feel heard.
3. Addictions : Employees feeling excessive stress at work may respond as they would in a family by abusing substances or playing on the internet at work or checking out in other ways.
4. Individuation : Some work teams have an atmosphere where employees feel "damned if you do and damned if you don't." Just like in families, sometimes a member may feel like they can never do anything to please the important people in their lives and still please themselves.
5. Coalitions : When family members don't talk directly to each other about how one person's behavior affects another, a third person can get triangled in to the situation, causing family coalitions. In business, to prevent unhealthy coalitions from developing people must learn to use assertive communication skills.
Here are some other topics where companies may need help from a systemic family therapist:
- Building stronger work relationships
- Navigating the workplace emotional minefield
- Using power effectively while improving supervisory skills
- Encouraging creativity and initiative
- Resolving conflict in a healthy and productive way
- Managing stress in high pressure careers
- Dealing with people who don't communicate effectively
- Dealing with addiction ie. substance abuse, computer use, etc.
- Preventing burnout in overachievers and motivating underachievers
- Resolving sexual harassment before the lawsuit
